Chick Flick 101

What classifies as a good chick flick you might be asking yourself now. Well we've created a 3 step rating system that will ensure the quality of any chick flick you may be interested in watching.
1. Girls love emotion, although we may not always want to admit it. So the first step in a great chick flick is to inspire emotions. The more the better. A move that can make you laugh, cry, get angry, give you butterflies, etc is worth gold.  ie. Never Been Kissed(1999) or Sleepless in Seattle (1993)
2. Next step to a chick flick is it must have some sort of romantic or "sisterhood" type bond. ie. PS I love you (2007) or Legally Blonde (2001)
3. And lastly when you are finished watching a chick flick you have to feel like it was well worth your time. Like a piece of your life is complete now that the shrew is tamed in 10 things I hate about you (1999) or now that meryl and paul have patched their marriage in Did you Hear about the Morgans (2009)

Number 1

1. PS I love you (2007)

Synopsis: A young widow discovers that her late husband has left her 10 messages intended to help ease her pain and start a new life.

Rating: *****

Reason for Rating: Having been an experienced chick flick observer even I was skeptical about the hype surrounding this movie. I was more than impressed though after I saw it. Not only does it mix a dreamy actor like Gerard Butler but it puts him in a character that is so unbelievably AMAZING. If you want a movie that will make you cry, get angry, and laugh all within the span of 2 hours then this is the movie for you.

2. Sleepless in Seattle (1993)

Synopsis: A recently-widowed man's son calls a radio talk show in an attempt to find his father a partner.

Reason for Rank:  Every girls dream come true. All wrapped up in one AMAZINGLY romantic movie. This movie is the epitamy of a chick flick. 

For starters you have a sarcastic sexy male actor who plays the

 part of a single father not looking for love. His son has some different plans in mind. Which is what brings a lucky gal to NYC where she is to fall madly in love with him... or not? thats for you to find out when you watch it and fall in love with this movie!


Best Quote: Verbal ability is a highly overrated thing in a guy, and it's our pathetic need for it that gets us into so much trouble. 

Number 3

3. The Lakehouse (2006)

Synopsis: A lonely doctor who once occupied an unusual lakeside home begins exchanging love letters with its former resident, a frustrated architect. They must try to unravel the mystery behind their extraordinary romance before it's too late.

Reason for Rank: loneliness is a powerful force, but the mystery of this phenomenon is an awesome thing to watch. See if for yourself

Number 4

4. Never Been Kissed (1999)

Synopsis: A journalist enrolls in her old highschool as part of her research for a story.

Rating: ****
Reason for Rank:  One of the greatest components that this chick flick has is change. Here we have the awkward 25 year old copy editor who's never really recovered from her negative highschool experiences is now thrust in a a highschool as a student to get a story for her work. What happens when she catches the fancy of a cute teacher or the hottest guy in school...


Best Quote: Sex can be fun... when you're old enough, which none of you are. I should know. When you lose it to some guy named Junior with bad breath in the back of a van at a Guns N' Roses concert, you're gonna wish you had listened to your mother when she said, "They're not gonna want to buy the whole friggin' ice cream truck when you're handing out the popsicles for free!"

Number 5

5. What Women Want (2000)

Synopsis: After an accident, a chauvenistic executive gains the ability to hear what women are really thinking.

Rating: ****

Reason for Rank: If your looking for a movie that has a stereotypical single father working at a job that requires a lot of extra activities. Ones of these activities includes finding a way to sell common women's products. While testing one of these he has a freak accident which causes him to "hear" what women think. Of course what kind of man would pass up an opportunity like this! Gibson uses his newfound talent to seduce the new hotty has his work. The rest is chick flick history....

Number 6

 6. The Proposal (2009)

Synopsis: A pushy boss forces her young assistant to marry her in order to keep her Visa status in the U.S. and avoid deportation to Canada.

Reason for Rank:  How can you not love the dynamic between a sexy arrogant boss and unappreciated and hot assistant. So why is this one so high on our list? Well there's something so touching about an unhappy person being converted to the back-woods happy go lucky families way of life. There is a few sketchy parts (ie. running into each other in the nude), but paired with the comedy of these situations makes it an awesome movie if your looking for a great laugh.

Number 7

7. While you were Sleeping (1995)

Synopsis: Ticket collecting romantic pretends to be engaged to an unconscious man but can't fool his brother

Rating: ****
Reason for Rank: When a caring soul saves a man from being hit by a train, her concern for him leads her to lying about being his finance to see how he's recovering. The problem is while she's visiting his  bubbly boisterous family interrupts and believes her lie she doesn't have the heart to disappoint them so she goes along with the lie. The problems arise when the man's brother finds out about her secret and falls in love with her himself. At this time the brother awakens from his coma with amnesia and believes the lie that she is his finance. So which brother does she end up with? thats for you to find out.
Best Quote: Jack: I guess I don't remember meeting you. 
Lucy: Well, that's probably because we've never met. 
Jack: That could have something to do with it. 

Number 8

8. Legally Blonde (2001)

synopsis: When a blonde sorority queen is dumped by her boyfriend, she decides to follow him to law school to get him back and, once there, learns she has more legal savvy than she ever imagined.

Reason for Rating: This movie was designed for chicks to appreciate! The basis of the plot is a "blonde" sorority gal looses who she thinks is the love of her life for law school. So she does what any sane gal would do. She enrolls in law school in an attempt to remind him of what he's missing. The hilarious part of this movie comes from putting a sexy "bimbo" in the realm of suits, ties and lies and watching her work her magic. 

Best Quote: [Elle is in tears at the salon after she finds out Warner dumped her for her new rival, Vivian] So what's this Vivian got that you don't have? Three tits?

9. 27 Dresses (2008)

Synopsis: After serving as a bridesmaid 27 times, a young woman wrestles with the idea of standing by her sister's side as her sibling marries the man she's secretly in love with.

Rating: ****

Reason for Rating: There is some twisted sense of aww that women get around the topic of weddings. This movie centers around this insanity that comes with chicks and weddings. Pair up a journalist looking for a good story and an awesome girl who has been in one too many weddings as a bridesmaid and you've got grounds for an AMAZING movie.

Best Quote: I feel like I just found out my favorite love song was written about a sandwich.

Number 10

10. You've Got Mail (1998)

Synopsis: Two business rivals hate each other at the office but fall in love over the internet.

Rating: ****

Reason for Rank: For some reason there has always been a unhealthy stereotype surrounding internet dating. In this movie we see a man and a women who despise each other due to their bookstores competitiveness Sometimes opposites attack as happens in this movie. Will their significant others prevent their newfound love to grow or will their own hatreds overpower their love for each other.

Best Quote: The whole purpose of places like Starbucks is for people with no decision-making ability whatsoever to make six decisions just to buy one cup of coffee. Short, tall, light, dark, caf, decaf, low-fat, non-fat, etc. So people who don't know what the hell they're doing or who on earth they are can, for only $2.95, get not just a cup of coffee but an absolutely defining sense of self: Tall. Decaf. Cappuccino.

Number 11

11. Dirty Dancing (1987)

Synopsis: Spending the summer in a holiday camp with her family, Frances ('Baby') falls in love with the camp's dancing teacher.

Rating: ****

Reason for Rating: In movies when innocent little girls go on vacations and meet sexy dancers like Patrick Swayzee all us girls at home imagine what life would be like if we rebelled, stirred the pot, made life a little steamy. That is the amazing thing that this movie inspires. How can you not want to watch a steamy chick flick about dancing, wealthy families, and summer love. 

Best Quote: Nobody puts Baby in a corner.

12. A Walk to Remember (2002)

Synopsis: The story of two North Carolina teens, Landon Carter and Jamie Sullivan, who are thrown together after Landon gets into trouble and is made to do community service.

Rating: ****

Reason for Rank:  One of the greatest emotional draws to this movie is illness. A dying girl is forced to work side by side with a young troublemaker. She gives him only one rule. Don't fall in love with me. It was once said that rules were made to be broken as happens in this film.....

Number 13

13. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954)

Synopsis: In 1850 Oregon, when a backwoodsman brings a wife home to his farm, his six brothers decide that they want to get married too.

Rating: ****

Reason for Rank:  We had to throw in an oldie and this one really should be labelled a classic! When a husky woodsman comes home with a wife after a simple trip to town his 6 other brothers who live with him decide to get hitched as well. The only problem is unmarried women are few and far between in Oregon at this time so they do what any smart men would do. They kidnap them some wives. What happens when the girl's kin come to rescue them really play into the comedy of this film

Number 14

14. The Notebook (2004)

Synopsis: A poor and passionate young man falls in love with a rich young woman and gives her a sense of freedom. They soon are separated by their social differences. 

Rating: *****

Reason for Rank: To a certain extent every girl wants to be chased after and appreciated by a young man. In this movie the gal gets everything she wants but her families influences drives them apart. His love never dies and he continues to purse her long after she's gone and that phrase if you love something let it go and if it loves you too it will come back is true. So does it end happily for these young lovers? Thats for you to find out.

Number 15

15. Must Love Dogs (2005)

Synopsis: A forty-something preschool teacher looks to the personals for a change of pace and a relationship, with hilarious results.

Rating: ****

Reason for Rank:  There is always a stereotype that gets put on internet dating in movies and this film is about defying those. A women who is getting a little on in her years is tricked into signing up for online dating via her family. Besides the usual requests she also adds in must love dogs. This movie is hilarious the adventure and crazy stuff she goes through to find that one man who must love dogs. 

Best Quote:I love this internet. It's part fantasy, part community, and you get to pay your bills naked.
